Pioneer Village Celebrates 70th Birthday
“n June 27th” 1958, a young budding photographer Colin Gill felt, “e took his life into his own hands” when the then Prime Minister Sir Bob Menzies and he tried to squeeze thorough the same doorway at EPOFH.
Seventy years on, Colin, now a resident of EPOFH recalls. “ig Bob” was here to officially open the Home. Also in attendance was his wife, Dame Pattie Menzie and Sir Thomas Playford.
The first discussion that was the catalyst for The Old Folks Home was in 1948 at a town meeting, where it was decided that the people across EP requiring aged care services could be better cared for in a local Home, rather than a hospital or having to go to Adelaide.
Significant fund raising began and in 1957 with a garden fete was held at the home of Mr and Mrs Puckridge. There was a quiz contest undertaken and for five pounds, participants had a chance to win a Holden FE Special car valued at 835 pounds. The eventual winner was Mr R.W. Watkins from Yeelanna.
On the 6th of May 6, 1958, the first Matron arrived on site and on the 15th of May Jannetta Hammond [nee Berryman] entered the Home. At the time, residents were referred to as inmates! How far we have come!
Over the last few weeks, the Home has been celebrating our 70th birthday with a family barbeque and vintage cars, as well as a birthday party with old style dancing and music by Judy Pearce. The Home has also had the Honor of many special guests including Mayor Diana Mislov and State MP Sam Telfer. Many past and present board members have also been present, including Andy Sampson, a local pharmacist, who volunteered as a board member for thirty-eight years.
Over the years EPOFH has been the quiet achiever. She has been extended and upgraded. But most importantly there has been a significant improvement in the standard of care residents receive. Under the guidance of passionate people, she has evolved into a welcoming home filled with laughter and love. She is no-longer just a place to quietly wait out your time. She has I think, aged to perfection.
